Magnolia pics and Two Lovers

Indie Survivor: Magnolia Pix

2929 Entertainment's specialty distrib Magnolia Pictures has been growing and surviving--under the leadership of Eamonn Bowles and owners Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner, who also own HDNet and the indie Landmark Theatre chain. Magnolia released 27 pics in the last year--and plans to keep up that pace. Many of them don't go out that wide, or are booked on Landmark screens, while Flawless, starring Demi Moore, and some others have succeeded beyond expectations as "Ultra-VOD" releases. Here's my pre-Toronto column on the state of indie distribution.

Bowles is having a busy year: he's releasing two movies that 2929 had hoped to sell to another distrib, but will release themselves: Art Linson and Barry Levinson's Hollywood comedy What Just Happened?, with a big-name cast led by Robert DeNiro, which will not pursue the VOD model, and James Gray's well-reviewed Cannes entry, the triangle romance Two Lovers, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwenyth Paltrow, which has not yet been dated. Wonder if they'll take the VOD route on that one?

MEDIA RIGHTS ADDING CANADIAN SHOW
Posted by: Karen | 07 Aug 2008 | 0 Comments

Canadian series "4Real," a feel-good, celebrity-driven half-hour exec produced by Joaquin Phoenix has been added to Media Rights Capital's Sunday night sked on the CW.

Two episodes of the show will air back-to-back in the 6 p.m. hour beginning Sept. 21, the same night MRC's CW lineup launches.

MRC also informed CW affiliates that repeats of new reality series "In Harm's Way" will air at 5 p.m. As previously announced, firstrun episodes of "In Harm's Way" will air at 7 p.m. until late October, when the show slides down to 6:30 p.m.

Skein "4Real" follows celebs as they travel around the globe to meet with real-life leaders creating change in their communities. Besides Phoenix, stars participating in the show include Cameron Diaz, who traveled to Peru; Casey Affleck, who went to the Pawnee Nation reservation in Oklahoma; Eva Mendes, who shot her episode in Vancouver; and Flea, of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, who flew to Haiti.

Direct Current Media produced the show, originally for CTV and MTV Canada; Sol Guy hosts and co-created the series (with Josh Thome).

Eight episodes of "4Real" were produced by CTV -- which means MRC will need to fill the 6 p.m. slot again come late October.

MRC is programming a total of five hours on Sunday for CW starting this fall. Besides the three hours in primetime, MRC inherited the net's pre-primetime 5-7 p.m. block -- in which the CW used to air repurposed episodes of its dramas -- as part of the deal. Prior to the CW, the WB, which first negotiated the 5-7 p.m. block as an alternative to programming on Saturdays -- branded the timeslot as "Easy View."

NEW YORK -- At May's Festival de Cannes, buyers rushed to see the latest work from three American auteurs: Steven Soderbergh's "Che," James Gray's "Two Lovers" and Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York." But the fest ended without any of the films clinching a U.S. sale. >>more in "Full Story"
